That's right. There have been a lot of firsts take place in Niagara Falls but this one was a "biggie".
On the evening of November 15, 1846, in Buffalo, New York Mayor Jewett threw a switch that enabled power from Niagara to energize the transmission system of this city about 21 kilometres away. It was the first time ever that alternating current was used in the world!. Prior to that Direct Current was in use and to use this power you had to be much closer to the source.
The system was invented by a brilliant engineer named Nicola Tesla. Without this long-distance transmission of electricity the world would be a much different place. Thanks Mr. Tesla.

glenn carson Brought my family to niagara falls to see the Chritmas lights. We walked through the park and enjoyed the display until we got to the Pilgrimage to Mecca lights. This on its own does not offend me I know we live in a multi cultural country, what is offensive is that there was no nativty scene. I have to think that this was purposely omitted. So to me Niagara falls wants my Christmas money as long as theres no mention of Christmas. We won't be back this year or any other, you'll have to depend on the Mecca crowd.
George Bailey Thanks for your note. In checking with the Winter Festival of Lights and Niagara Parks folks they tell me all displays have to have a sponsor ( Roughly $10,000 per display). They do have a tentative sponsor for a Christian display for next year. However, if you follow the Light Trail you'll see a lovely outdoor Nativity display at Christ Church along the lower Niagara River. Also the Niagara Parks will continue their tradition of placing a creche inside the Floral Showcase (Greenhouse) as we get closer to Christmas.Admittance is free. Hope this is helpful.
a guy from buffalo Congratulations on your blog, many interesting stories you tell here. I particularly liked to hear about your affairs with both Princess Diana and Marilyn Monroe -- does that make you a daredevil? (just kidding...) Also high on my list are your tips about the sunrise over the falls (great!) and the icewine festival. If you allow me to suggest a minor fix, on this post about the power from Niagara, I think you are referring to the evening of November 15, 1896, not 46. Best wishes and a great New Year!
George Thanks for the comments You are 100% correct on the date. I should have said 1898. I put us into the new age 50 years sooner! To all,May 2010 bring you good health and happy times all year long.
Patricia Hello, Very interesting your blog. I'm looking for a local Catholic church so my husband and I can remarry. We are celebrating our 20th anniversary at Niagara Falls. The trip is a surprise for my husband. Thanks. Patricia
