Any of you who read this blog probably realize that Ontario Power Generation have been digging since 1996 the world’s largest hard-rock tunnel called “Big Becky” from the existing generating plants at Queenston to Niagara Falls, Ontario. Last Friday, the 10.2 kilometre tunnel, which cost 1.6 billion dollars, was finally complete when it reached the upper Niagara River. The tunnel is expected to be completed in 2013 after it has been lined with concrete. Soon after that it will to start to generate enough electricity to power 160,000 additional homes in Ontario.
The tunneling took place under the City of Niagara Falls and The Niagara Parks Commission without any disruption to business.
Totally, the power plants found on both sides of the Niagara border produce one of the largest sources of hydro power in the world.
In the accompanying photograph a lone worker makes a last minute check on Friday May 13th before the south end of the tunnel is open.
