DOES THE NIAGARA RIVER FREEZE? By
2009-02-09 11:22:32
| I've had some questions recently about whether or not the Niagara River ever freezes up?” The answer is no. The water going over Niagara Falls continues to flow at a rate of 4 to 8 miles per hour. The volume of water going over the falls (at this time of the year about 100,000 cubic feet per second, give or take a few cubic feet) and speed of the water prevents the water from freezing.
During a very cold winter an ice bridge usually forms below the falls. However, these ice bridges aren’t like they use to be. The last real big ice bridge was formed in 1954. An international ice boom installed at the mouth of the Niagara River at Lake Erie has prevented the build up of these big ice bridges.

jane feenan i would like 2 plan a romantic weekend away. i'm wondering what side of Niagara is better 2 visit. ive heard different opinions that the Canadian side gives more view of the falls. please advise what u think? thanks
george Jane,The sister cities of Niagara Falls, Ontario and Niagara Falls, New York both offer views of the falls. I think it is fair to say that the more `frontal View' of the falls is seen from the Canadian side. Niagara Falls,Ontario has an estimated 12-14 million visitors a year. Niagara Falls, New York about half that number. Also, Niagara Falls, Ontario has a large number of name brand hotels with superb view of the falls from many of the rooms. I hope this helps.
Annie hi! I am a student from Australia, a couple of friends and I are wanting to visit the Niagara Falls in March. I was wondering if you could suggest some activities to do or things to see there. Cheers!
george Annie, There are lots of things to do in March in Niagara Falls. Here are just a few suggections. The ice-bridge should still be around below the falls, so make sure you get some photos to show your friends back down-under. In late March Queen Victoria Park near the falls starts to come alive with spring flowers. You'll enjoy walking here and nearby Dufferin Islands is a terrific place to spend a morning exploring the nature trails. On Niagara's `street of fun` ,Clifton Hill there are plenty of museums and night clubs to take in.To obtain a more extensive list of things to do and the events happening in March go to www.niagarafallstourism.com. Hope this helps.
