We can thank Marilyn Monroe and the movie “Niagara” filmed in 1952 for the growth of motels in Niagara Falls. Let me explain.
After this movie was released in 1953 millions of people saw Marilyn and Joseph Cotton, who played her husband, staying at a motel directly across from the falls. It was only a movie set but enquiries kept coming in to stay at the movie set motel known as, “Rainbow Cabins.”
This spurted a growth of new motel construction in Niagara Falls. Numerous Ma and Pa motels appeared on Lundy’s Lane and several in the Fallsview area. Many of these motels have been torn down and re-appeared as Niagara hotels, some of which bear the original names. i.e Americana, Candlelight Royal Coachman, Lamplighter etc.
Thanks Marilyn.

Barry Wilson Dear Mr. Baily I guess it's a coincidence that I found your blog when you were featuring an entertainment story. I never realized that movie gave such a lift to Niagara Falls. I also would be interested in getting an opinion from you about a Unique theatre experience that one can't find anywhere else that I am putting together. I won't get into it further as you may not have the time. Thank you for these blogs. I moved to ST. Catharines and love history, Barry
George Bailey Barry, Thanks , I will contact you.
Emma Are there any copies of your book `Marilyn Monroe and the Making of Niagara` available to purchase? I've read a 3-year-old comment where you mention some copies still available for $50 plus postage. Am I too late? Thanks for your wonderful Niagara site ... great memories of going there regularly for the last 40+ years! I never tire of it. Best regards, E. Dobell
George Bailey Emma, My book is no longer in print. I have one copy that I have kept for myself. There are about 1000 of the books in circulation.
Joan I had a history teacher at Scarborough Collegiate (now known as R.H. King Academy) by the name of Miss Lane who told us she was the double for Marilyn Monroe in the movie Niagara. She certainly wowed all the male students in the halls of the school!!
George Bailey Joan,Maybe one of the readers of this blog can comment as to whethjer or not this is true.
