Now here’s something a lot of people don’t know about this breakfast cereal.
Did you know that as early as 1904 this popular breakfast cereal had been produced in both Niagara Falls New York and Ontario by the National Biscuit Company (Nabisco)? It continues to be produced in Niagara Falls Ontario by Post Foods. This plant produces a full line of nutritious breakfast cereals.
Some of us might remember the original Shredded Wheat boxes that had a photo of Niagara Falls on the outside. I’ve attached an image, courtesy of the City of Niagara Falls, Niagara Falls History Museum, of an original box. Try and visualize the falls on one of the panels that are not shown.
At the original, plant, now closed, in Niagara Falls New York as many as 100,000 people visited the plant yearly in the early 1900’s and were given a bowl of cereal and milk at the end of the tour.
ONE SIDE PANEL SHOWS A PICTURE OF BOTH FALLS AND PRINTED IN RED THE HOME OF SHREDDED WHEAT, NIAGARA FALLS, ONTARIO, COPYRIGHT 1911, BY THE SHREDDED WHEAT CO.
