Some people are still unaware that the Falls of Niagara are lit up with a battery of lights from on the Canadian side of the border 365 days of the year and not just for the annual Niagara Festival "Winter Festival of Lights". It was 150 years ago (September 1860)that the falls were illuminated in honour of an upcoming visit of the Prince of Wales. Using 200 Bengal lights that were arranged in 50 to 60 rows under the cliff on the Canadian side facing the American Falls and another 60 lights under Table Rock the falls were lit up. A newspaper described the event this way,"The view the Prince got of the cataract on the evening of his arrival no man had ever seen before and will probably never see again." The report was wrong. You can still see the nightly Falls illumination any evening of the year. However, now 21 Xenon gas spotlights turn the cataracts nightly into an amazing array of colours. The sight is still amazing! An international body, The Niagara Falls Illumination Board, consisiting of the cities of Niagara Falls Ontario and Niagara Falls N.Y,Ontario Power,Niagara Parks Commission and the Niagara Frontier State Parks pay for the illumination.

Alana Interesting trivia about the falls first being illuminated in honor of an upcoming visit of the Prince of Wales - didn't know that! (I'm originally from London and now live in San Francisco.) Visited Niagara Falls a few months ago - what an amazing sight! Can't wait to go back again to see the Falls illumination at night.
Captain Bentley Hi George! I just had a trip to the falls for my first time this week! Loved it! Bought your book! Loved it! Lillian Fairley I have some questions regarding the Canadian Falls. Can anyone offer advice, information, etc. regarding the best hotels based on safety, kid-friendliness, best falls view, walking distance to Falls and activities, waterpark and shopping, etc.? I have been seriously considering the Embassy Suites, Hilton Fallsview, the Oakes or the Sheraton. Any thoughts on these hotels?? I would like to put together an all-inclusive type package deal for the group that will include 5-nights accommodations (fallsview, of course) including breakfast, shuttle service, Fallsview Indoor Waterpark, Skylon Tower, Prospect Point, Maid of the Mist, Cave of the Winds, Journey Behind the Falls, Whirlpool Aero car, Marine Land, Bird Kingdom, Goat Island and the Clifton Hills area (not necessarily all of this, but the most we can get in a packaged deal). I will also need information on crossing the border documentation requirements and transportation options (for those that decide to fly or take Amtrak). Does Amtrak even service the Canadian side of the Falls?? Will there be a currency exchange issue as well?? Again any & all information you can provide will be most helpful. This is our very first time into Canada and to Niagara Falls!!! Sincerely thanking you in advance,
George Bailey Lilklian, I think you're best bet is to contact a company that specializes in group tours to Niagara Falls, Canada.I'm sure you can find many of them on the net. They would be able to answer the questions regarding customs and border crossing. I'm not sure you realize some of the attractions found in your list are located in Niagara Falls, N.Y. U.S.A. It would be unfair for me to recommend one hotel over the other. There are so many good ones here in the falls. I hope this is helpful
