NIAGARA ON THE LAKE IS A VILLAGE OF FIRSTS

Just a few miles north of Niagara Falls located at one end of the Niagara River, is the historic village of Niagara-on-the-Lake.
It can boast of a large number of firsts. Here are just a few.
- It is the location of the initial session in September 1792 of the first parliament of Upper Canada (now Ontario).
- It is the location of Canada’s first Grist Mill (1783).
- The first to abolish slavery (1792) in Canada.
- The first edition of the Upper Canada Gazette.
- It is the birthplace of the Law Society of Canada.
- It is also the location of Ontario’s first library, Court House, post office and two of the first churches in Canada.
- The town’s museum, Memorial Hall was the first building in Ontario to be designated as a historical museum.
- The Angel Inn (circa 1825) is the oldest instill in operation in Canada.
- On August 25th, 1782 the first census in Upper Canada took place here. The town registered 16 families and 83 people. There were also 45 horses, 55 cattle, 88 hogs and 30 sheep.
Today, it is the location of the Shaw Festival, the only theatre company in the world that specializes in plays written by Bernard Shaw. Some of the finest examples of mid-Victorian, high style architecture can be found here. Check out the photo of the magnificent Prince of Wales hotel that I have attached to this blog. Also, NOTL is Canada’s most celebrated grape and wine producing regions. The list goes on and on but I will stop at this point.
Many people consider Niagara-on-the-Lake Canada’s most historic town.
