NIAGARA’S FIRST PHOTOGRAPHS By GEORGE BAILEY
2010-11-09 08:30:40
| In July of last year I wrote about Niagara and Photography and mentioned the first recorded photograph of Niagara Falls was a Daguerreotype photograph taken by H.L. Pattinson when he visited Niagara Falls in April of 1840.
In a recent local news article, it’s announced The Niagara Parks Commission has acquired a copy of one of these images that will soon go on display in the Niagara gardens in Queen Victoria Park.
In March of 1901, eight of Pattinson’s plates, seven of the falls including one of the old Clifton Hotel in Niagara Falls, Canada (taken in 1840) were discovered by librarians at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne in England. At the time it took about 15 minutes to expose the image. This gave Hugh Pattinson time to appear in his photographs.
I have copies of all of these images in my Niagara collection. I’ve attached the one where chances are Mr. Pattinson appeared. You will see lots of scratches but remember Photoshop wasn’t around at the time!
