NIAGARA’S ICE BRIDGE AND SHACKS By GEORGE BAILEY
2011-03-10 14:23:31
| Niagara Falls now has one of the nicest ice-bridges in years. An ice-bridge is the formation of ice below the falls from the Canadian to the U.S. side of the border.
Up until 1912, small temporary shacks were found on this ice-bridge. From these shacks hawkers sold just about anything. You could purchase a tintype photograph, souvenirs and even bootleg whiskey. The practice was abandoned after three people lost their lives when the ice-bridge broke up.
It is now illegal to enter onto the ice-bridge. Not only would it be foolish to do so but you’d also get a large fine.
