NIAGARA'S RAINBOW CARILLON - LET THE JOY RING OUT By GEORGE BAILEY
2010-07-27 16:03:54
| I was riding my bicycle this week along the Niagara Parkway towards Niagara Falls and when I went under the Rainbow Bridge I heard it.
Someone was playing the bells found in the Carillon Tower at the Canadian end of the Rainbow Bridge. I didn’t know the tune but it was lovely.
This musical monolith has been delighting tourists since the 1940’s. There are 55 bells in total and the largest weighs 10 tons (9072 kilograms)! They were tuned and cast in England. The Carillonneur plays everything from popular to classical every day from noon until 1pm.3 and 4pm and 6 and 7pm.
I grabbed a bench in one of the nearby Niagara Gardens, Oakes Garden Outdoor Amphitheatre, which overlooks Niagara Falls, and spent an hour enjoyed, what seemed like to me, my own personal concert.
