POWER FAILURE AND BIRTH RATES By George Bailey
2011-11-14 10:06:16
| Some of you might be old enough to remember, like me, the massive electric power failure that occurred at Niagara on November 9th, 1965 that paralyzed the north-eastern United States and large areas of Ontario and Quebec. It happened because of a minor switch defect at the Sir Adam Beck Generating Station at Queenston.
Interestingly enough nine months later the birth rates in all of the areas affected soared the following year! What’s that all about?
That reminds me Niagara Falls in the 1920's was referred too as "The Baby City". It was because many people who came to Niagara Falls on their honeymoon (remember we are the traditional Honeymoon Capital of the World) conceived their first child here. Niagara Falls was also called in the early 1900's, "The Power City" due to the development of hydro power at Niagara Falls.
I’ve attached a photograph of a Honeymoon couple in the 1950’s gazing at the Canadian Horseshoe Falls from Table Rock Point. I'd say honeymoon couples today have a more relaxed dress code!
