The depth of the Niagara River is determined by the length of time the Falls stays in one location.
Currently it is about as deep as the falls is high, about 52 metres (170 feet). That’s because the falls are not receding as fast as they once did. The reason - less water is allowed to go over the falls because half of the volume that could go over the falls is diverted upriver for power production. Therefore the falling water has more time to dig into the river bed.
In the evenings after midnight and during the winter months (when there are fewer visitors) another quarter of the water that could go over the falls is diverted for power purposes.
During the summer months about 6 million cubic feet of water goes over the falls every minute. That’s about a million bath tubs full of water every second.
Even with this large diversion of water Niagara Falls still continues to draw 14 million visitors a year.
